Wearing & Caring for Retainers

A retainer may be necessary following orthodontic treatment for patients to maintain their new smile!

How long should I wear my retainer?

Every patient is different. This means that every patient will have to wear their retainer for different lengths of time.

However, up to 6 months after treatment, we recommend wearing your retainer as close to 24 hours per day as possible.

After that 6 month period is over, you may need to only wear your retainers in the morning and evening, or only during sleep.

Why do I need to wear my retainer?

You should wear your retainer as recommended so that you do not undo the work that has been done through your orthodontic treatment.

Your teeth can move and shift to improper positions. Retainers help preserve and stabilize the results from your braces or Invisalign treatment.

How do I take care of my retainer?

  • Retainers require care and consideration when eating food.
  • Carry the retainer case wherever you go
  • Do not wrap your retainer in tissue or napkins
  • Remove retainers before:
    • eating
    • brushing
    • flossing
    • physical activities
  • Remove the retainer properly as instructed by your orthodontist.
  • Brush your retainer when you brush your teeth to ensure it stays clean
